“Thus the anarchisms as articulated in the Western tradition of anarchism were not a true opposition but, instead, an analytically consistent alternative. It was an alternative of the social order, not to it. It did not contradict the language of civil society but like Marxism, more specifically the vulgar Marxism represented by the economism of the late 19th-century German Social Democrats, was evidence of the search for a more rational expression of the social vision contained in that language” (216)
